U is for use your resources. They tell you to write what you know, which certainly makes it easier, but it doesn’t necessarily make for an exciting story. In this lovely age of modern technology, you have worlds of information at your fingertips. Long gone are the days of having to trek to the library and use that clunky old card catalog to find your reference books (do kids today even know what the Dewey Decimal system is?!). Don’t be afraid to stop and do some research for your stories, on locations, types of weapons, exotic fruits, whatever. Just remember that sites like Wikipedia have a ton of info, but because it’s user supplied, the information may not always be 100% correct.
Day 21: You should be hitting around 35,000 words today. Can you believe it? If you’re using a standard sized font you should be close to having 80 written pages. 80!! If you find you need some motivation, print out your work so far. You’d be amazed how nice it is to hold all those pages in your hands.
